I am not a "Kindle" mom.

Earlier today LT and I were discussing getting books to read to Jelly Bean and I told him I had found a few online for a decent price. He suggested to me that I just find a PDF version online. For some reason, it bothers me! I grew up with a love of books...I love the way they smell, the way the pages sound when you turn them, the way they feel in your hands. I just cannot get into e-books.

Another reason I do not want to do e-books is because I'd like for Jelly Bean to have as much time apart from electronics as we can. I know that there are some great educational applications on the iPhone but I just can't justify letting him sit there playing on it all day.

I know I will probably get a lot of grief from "seasoned" moms saying I will give in once he reaches a certain age but I just don't think that's the case. I want to be able to do with him the things that I did as a child, such as finger painting, sidewalk chalk, and using a single box as a fort. I want him to use his full imagination instead of clicking tiles on a keyboard.

I guess this is why I feel like we should get actual books for him. I want him to be able to understand all of the things that I love about books and how much I treasure each book that I own. I want books to be an experience for him instead of a novelty.

This isn't to say that I am going to keep him away from electronics forever. In fact, LT and I want to get him a Super Nintendo once he reaches a gaming age. I want him to know all of the classics like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong before he graduates to FPS games like his daddy plays.

Anyways, am I crazy here or is how I am feeling justifiable?

  1. I used to be firmly anti e-book, but I have come around. Nothing will EVER take away my love for the feel of a book in my hand, but I have learned to appreciate what ebooks have to offer. {but as for kids, I find mine focuses better when it's a real, in your hands book not electronic}

    1. I think I could only do an E-book for a long car ride but I won't rule it out 100% just yet!

  2. I agree. We have tons of books for my 4 yr old. However he loves his shows, innotab and he plays our ipad and iphone. All shows he watches and games he plays teaches him something minus the angry birds(he is obsessed). My child has the biggest imagination I have ever seen in a kid. He actually go into a lot of trouble at first in school bc he was pretending the other kids were dragons and he had to beat them. In the middle of eating cereal this morning he turned his spoon into a rocket ship. I said the whole time I pregnant with him that I hope he has a great imagination. I got my wish and then some. My son HATES to learn from me. He has learned how to do math and create patterns from team umizoomi. He has learned his letter sounds from his phonics dvds and can problem solve like nobodies business from everything else he watches and plays. I believe he wouldn't be in the top of his class if it wasn't for these things. Now I know it isn't for everyone and that is totally fine. He has so many learning toys and shelves of book that we read all the time. However he has his own ebooks for himself which are great for trips. You never know what you will try until it is the time. I said he wouldn't watch all the tv and play the games but they have helped him so much in so many ways that I am very thankful. And we are doing a nintendo 64 for my son also so he can play all the original games like we played as kids.
